Job description:-
Where are you going to work
Stichting Bootvluchteling provides medical and psychological (emergency) aid and stands up for the rights of people on the run. Where systems become inhumane and compassion is lost, we take action. Since 2015, we have been active in various locations on the fringes of Europe. Here, our teams, which rely largely on the strength of volunteers, provide medical and psychosocial assistance.
What are you going to do?
As a volunteer, you will join our medical team on Lesbos, which relies largely on the strength of professional volunteers. In addition to doctors and nurses, our interpreters, who live in the camp themselves, play an indispensable role in the medical team.
From our clinic in the camp, we provide emergency care, primarily in the evenings, seven days a week. The variety of complaints we see is wide: from flu-like symptoms to severe physical or psychological complaints.
Who are we looking for?
(Senior) doctors
Residents with at least two years of clinical experience, specialists, and physicians;
It is an advantage if you have experience in general practice, the emergency department, acute care, pediatrics, and International Health and Tropical Medicine;
You preferably have experience working in a multicultural setting.
Nurses
You have graduated as a nurse or nurse specialist;
You have at least two years of work experience;
It is an advantage if you have experience in the emergency department, acute care, pediatrics, and international health care;
You preferably have experience working in a multicultural setting.
What do we expect from you?
You are available for at least 6 weeks;
You have a good command of the English language, including medical terms (speaking other languages such as French, Arabic, or Farsi is a plus);
You are self-assured and physically and mentally healthy;
You have a B driving licence (you will need to drive a manual car daily);
You are open to late evening shifts and can handle little sleep well;
You can work well independently but also know the limits of your medical skills and know when to ask for help;
You handle emotional and confrontational situations well and know how to separate work and private life;
You can work well with people of different cultural backgrounds and religions;
You are flexible and can easily adapt to changes.
Terms and costs
Stichting Bootvluchteling can only exist thanks to the dedication of our many volunteers and the support of donors. Without them – without you – we cannot do our work. We allocate our financial resources as much as possible to direct emergency aid. Therefore, we ask volunteers to cover the costs of their own travel, accommodation, and necessary registration documents.
We offer accommodation in our volunteer house on Lesbos. For volunteers staying for a month or longer, the contribution is €350 per month, including meals during services. If you do not wish to participate in the communal meals, you pay €300. For volunteers staying for less than a month, a contribution of €12 per night applies.
After a stay of one month, accommodation in the volunteer house is free of charge. Additionally, if you work for us for at least three consecutive months, you can receive a volunteer allowance of €220 per month upon request.
