JOB DESCRIPTION

The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) plays a critical role in promoting employee health,

managing workplace illness and injury, and supporting a proactive safety culture. This

position provides clinical care, health education, and wellness services to employees,

while contributing to incident prevention strategies and regulatory compliance. The OHN

works closely with the HSE team and other stakeholders to ensure a healthy and

productive workforce.

This position reports directly to the Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Manager.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Care & Injury Management (40%)

• Provide walk-in triage, treatment, and follow-up care for work-related injuries and

illnesses.

• Conduct return-to-work evaluations and collaborate with HSE and leadership to ensure

safe reintegration.

• Maintain confidential medical records and ensure compliance with applicable health

regulations.

• Perform drug and alcohol testing in accordance with company policy and regulatory

standards.

Health Monitoring & Wellness Promotion (30%)

• Deliver wellness coaching on topics such as smoking cessation, stress management,

weight loss, and chronic disease prevention.

• Monitor employee health indicators (e.g., blood pressure, weight) and provide guidance

on improving health outcomes.

• Manage vaccination and flu shot programs, including scheduling, administration, and

documentation.

• Assist employees in accessing primary care services and act as a liaison with external

healthcare providers.

Preventative Programs & Education (15%)

• Lead the site’s hearing conservation program, including testing coordination and follow

up.

• Respiratory fit testing

• Support the development and delivery of employee health education sessions.

• Contribute to comprehensive incident prevention strategies through onsite treatment

and process ownership.

Program & Process Support (15%)

• Manage the onsite Medical First Response (MFR) program, including responder

coordination, training, and equipment oversight.

• Assist with the development and maintenance of functional job descriptions related to

physical demands and health requirements.

Exclusions – Return to Work Coordination:

The OHN does not manage occupational injury case files, develop RTW plans, or liaise with

Workers’ Compensation Boards.

These responsibilities fall under the Return-to-Work Coordinator, who oversees

occupational injury case management and modified duty planning.

Key Competencies:

• Clinical nursing experience in occupational health or emergency care.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on employee well-being.

• Ability to manage confidential health information with professionalism and discretion.

• Knowledge of workplace health regulations and preventative health strategies.
